Collective ideation platform to develop innovative tools to communicate the European Cultural Landscapes by train.

Facts and Figures

Scope

RAILtoLAND project aims to explore the social and educational value of the European cultural landscape, as a common heritage, and as a catalyser of consolidation of European identity processes, social cohesion, creation of local cultures and improvement of human well-being.

It is aligned with the aims of the European Landscape Convention, involving the target population in decision-making processes and designing landscape enhancement initiatives.

Strategy

E-learning and Online Education for Student and University Concept. Graphic interface showing technology of digital training course for people to do remote learning from anywhere.

In particular, the project proposes formal and informal learning dynamics that prioritize structured dialogues with young people and mutual learning in an international and intercultural context.

It tests methodologies of educational innovation, such as Design Thinking or Learning by doing, aimed at improving horizontal skills and competences in communication, creativity and critical thinking. It resorts to the Open Learning platforms of High Education partners to expand their training offer in terms of valorisation, management and protection of landscapes, specifically European landscapes, and their built heritage, especially the railway.

Case study

Indeed, railways are the focus of this project because of its structuring and dynamic nature of the territory, and because it serves as a platform for the appreciation of cultural landscapes throughout Europe from a new perspective and because it constitutes one of the key elements in the construction of modern Europe.

The selected case study is the international Porto-Vigo railway line.

Co-funded by Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sports with the aim to help tackle socio-economic changes, the key challenges that Europe will be facing until the end of the decade and to support the implementation of the European policy agenda for growth, jobs, equity and social inclusion.

The RAILtoLAND project is co-funded by Erasmus+ under its Key Action 2: Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices.

    Intellectual Outputs

The proposed activities of the RAILtoLAND project consist in a MOOC Micromaster on the valorisation and communication of the European Cultural Landscapes and its Railway Heritage and a guide of didactic contents, applied to the Porto-Vigo line.

Accompanying this didactic material of a more theoretical or conceptual nature, other digital intellectual outputs have been designed that try to optimize their possibilities of transfer to citizens, so they have a more informative profile (although with high quality content) and more dynamic (videos, 3D modelling of landscapes, augmented reality…).

These materials are integrated in an application, RAILtoLAND, downloadable in iOS and Android that works by geo-positioning the train along the different identified landscape units.

Due to the specific nature of the contents and the operation of the application, it will be designed, as a pilot project, for the Porto-Vigo railway line.

    O1. MOOC

The first intellectual output is a Micromaster designed by means of short MOOCs aimed at providing the student with knowledge and tools to improve his understanding of the European landscape and its railway heritage.

This course allows the student to recognize the landscape and heritage as cultural and tourism resources, identifying opportunities of entrepreneurship through ICT.

The Micromaster Landscape and Railway in the European cultural identity consists of three Modules:
Module: Landscape and Railway in the European Cultural Identity

Module: The railway system: European Identity symbol, cultural and tourist value https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8bSwVy8_IcPjSPD1GOt00hyUnjJ5BAGw

Module: Techniques for the interpretation, representation and communication (IRC) or railway cultural landscape in Europe https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL8bSwVy8_IcMv8ft5wmpGMdFYlabGfHkY

    02. VIRTUAL LAB
A massive experience including the video register of the Porto-Vigo trip and a lot of activities among students and professors in the specific room prepare to simulate real railways travel experience.

    04. LANSCAPE 3D INFOGRAPHIC

Intellectual Output 4 is aimed to obtain a 3D infographic of the territory along the route of the Porto-Vigo railway. The product will be a realistic image of the route and its surrounding landscape.

This high-quality product, built from raster and vector information, is also enriched thanks to the on field acquisitions by its partner responsible, Univpm.

In addition, you could find some very interesting 3D models of some points of interest

    05. DIDACTIC GUIDE

This intellectual output is a complete interpretation of the landscapes of Porto-Vigo line, focused on the history of the railway line and its link with the surrounding landscape. It is available in three languages (Spanish, English and Portuguese) and it is a perfect complement to the railTOland APP.
