European cultural landscapes, by train
About RAILtoLAND
Collective ideation platform to develop innovative tools to communicate the European Cultural Landscapes by train. RAILtoLAND explores the social and educational value of the European cultural landscape as a common heritage, and as a catalyser of European identity, social cohesion, local cultures and human well-being. It is aligned with the European Landscape Convention: the people concerned take part in decisions, and the project designs landscape enhancement initiatives.
Porto–Vigo
Railways are the focus because they structure the territory and open cultural landscapes across Europe from the train. The case study is the international Porto–Vigo railway line.
Strategy
The project proposes formal and informal learning that prioritises structured dialogues with young people and mutual learning in an international and intercultural context. It tests Design Thinking and learning by doing, aimed at communication, creativity and critical thinking. It uses the open learning platforms of the higher-education partners to extend training on the valorisation, management and protection of landscapes, and of railway heritage in particular.

Intellectual Outputs
The proposed activities of the RAILtoLAND project consist in a MOOC Micromaster on the valorisation and communication of the European Cultural Landscapes and its Railway Heritage and a guide of didactic contents, applied to the Porto-Vigo line.
Accompanying this didactic material, other digital intellectual outputs have been designed for citizens: videos, 3D modelling of landscapes and augmented reality. These materials are integrated in the RAILtoLAND application, downloadable on iOS and Android, which geo-positions the train along the identified landscape units. The pilot is the Porto-Vigo railway line.

O1. MOOC
The first intellectual output is a Micromaster of short MOOCs on the European landscape and its railway heritage. The Micromaster Landscape and Railway in the European cultural identity has three modules:
- Landscape and Railway in the European Cultural Identity
- The railway system: European identity symbol, cultural and tourist value
- Techniques for the interpretation, representation and communication of railway cultural landscape in Europe
O2. Virtual lab
A massive experience including the video register of the Porto-Vigo trip and activities among students and professors in a room prepared to simulate a real railway travel experience.
O3. App design
The railTOland app:
O4. Landscape 3D infographic
A 3D infographic of the territory along the Porto-Vigo railway, built from raster and vector information and enriched by on-field acquisitions from UNIVPM, plus 3D models of points of interest.
O5. Didactic guide
A complete interpretation of the landscapes of the Porto-Vigo line, focused on the history of the railway and its link with the surrounding landscape. It is available in Spanish, English and Portuguese. The guides are on Google Drive:
